Welcome back! Of course I am talking mostly to myself there. I took a lot of time off from the blog while I was on a soul searching mission. I only found a few so I am returning.
The Reds filled one of their up front needs for 2013 today by signing Jonathan Broxton to a 3 year deal. The details have not been released at this point. I sorta cringed at a 3 year deal for the big man, but then I realized that he is only 28 years old. The Reds intended to find a closer not just for 2013, but for the next few seasons. This would answer that. The move might excite Reds fans a little bit more when they realize that Aroldis Chapman will likely be moved into the starting rotation this season. The Reds considered a couple other names out there as well. Broxton was the one that seemed to have the most interest. Who did you want?
The immediate question about the Chapman closer vs starter fiasco for me is now: What if Broxton goes down to injury? It happened last year. Madson was going to be our closer and Chapman was poised to take on the starting job. We saw how that worked out. More questions to answer down the road.
Speaking of Madson, how do you feel about him signing elsewhere? The man took $10.5 million to watch the Reds play a season and then leave town. It would have been nice if he felt a moral sense of obligation to work something out with the Reds. But overall, it’s a business and you cannot get too wrapped up in that. Don’t take it personal Reds fans. It was just a bad situation that we’re finally putting behind us.
Scott Rolen has not officially announced his retirement. And I am happy to see that. The Reds have contacted him to let him know that they would like him back “in some capacity.” Rolen knows that he will not be starting next season. He knows that the torch has been passed. But I would absolutely LOVE to see him come back in a Miguel Cairo role. Come off the bench and spare Votto or Frazier for a game a week each. Pinch hit late in the game. The guy has skills and I love his leadership with the team. Bring him back!
The NEXT issue that the Reds will focus their sights on is acquiring an outfielder (or two!). They have talked with Ryan Ludwick, but the two sides have not been too close on anything that has been reported. The Reds have certainly had interest in Shane Victorino as well. I am concerned that they could overpay on both of these names. Ludwick had a great season, but it was his best in 4 years. Would they pay for 2012 Ludwick or 2011? A small market team that has very little money to spend cannot afford a big gamble. It would be nice to secure a LF and to upgrade CF with someone like Victorino.
The Reds have also been interested in BJ Upton. I would love to see Upton in a Reds uniform…Kate Upton that is. Can you imagine? Everything that I love wrapped into one. If she were holding a cold beer then I would probably lose it. BJ Upton would certainly be an upgrade for the Reds. He could hit 35 HR in this ball park and he would be a SB threat. But the price is a little high on him. I cannot see the Reds affording to add his salary in 2013.
It will be interesting to see what the Reds accomplish between now and the winter meetings (next week). I expect Walt to move focus quickly as soon as the Broxton deal is done.
