Yesterday’s Headline: Stubbs is good at baseball

Drew Stubbs came up with the Reds down 1 in the 9th inning last night and knocked in 2 runs to give them the lead getting a big time clutch hit off of former Reds closer Coco Cordero.  Was that Tuesday or Wednesday….wait, it was both!  The Reds did it again last night.  But in this instance, they were taking back a game that was rightfully theirs.

Homer Bailey threw another solid outing last night going 7 innings without allowing a run.  He did walk 5, but he pitched out of a couple jams and kept the Asstros off the board.  He turned it over to the bullpen and all hell broke loose.  Logan Ondrusek allowed a couple hits and with 1 on 2 out and the Reds still up 2-1, he allowed what was the worst defensive play by the Reds all season.  It was a double to left field in which a throwing error was committed by Ryan Ludwick getting the ball back into the infield.  The error allowed the runner to advance to third.  When Todd Frazier tried in vain to nail the runner at 3rd, the ball went past Rolen on a throwing error and the go ahead run scored.

You have to feel bad for Francisco Cordero.  There are a lot of people jesting at his inability and how he owed us at least 2 games back.  Funny?  Yes.  Accurate?  Yes.  But he is a great guy off the field and I always find it sad when I see a veteran who has had such a fantastic career losing it.  Without some tremendous bounce back, you could see the last of him this season.

Aroldis Chapman had no issues notching his 19th save.  He did allow a 1 out double, but collecting a strikeout on the inning and battling Altuve for the final out in a 9 pitch at bat he did not falter.

The Reds move on to Colorado tomorrow night for 3 games over the weekend.  Arroyo, Cueto and Latos will round out the rotation for the series.

Reds take game 2, Arroyo flirts with history

Bronson Arroyo was outstanding for 7 1/3 innings last night.  one out into the 8th, he fell apart and lost the lead.  Fortunately Drew Stubbs was there to drive a home run to center field and a somersaulting Aroldis Chapman closed it out for the save.

The Reds are back in action right now trying for the sweep!  Homer Baily is facing off against Zack Greinke.

Why not a Nyger Morgan tribute?  Sorry for the commentary from the 13 year old, but I think it’s funny.

Nyger Morgan is the biggest thug in baseball.  He head hunts catchers and plays dirty.  It warmed my heart to see him clotheslined.  Sure this was 2 years ago, but he is still a thug.

The Reds hope to win today as they head out for an 11 game west coast trip to wrap up the first half of the season.

Latos pitches like the guy the Reds traded for

Mat Latos threw a complete game, 4 hit, 1 run outing last night.  He peppered the strike zone with 24 straight strikes at one point.  He threw 80 on the night.  In short, Latos looked absolutely dominant.  He pitched like the guy that the Reds needed him to be this season.

Side note:  Kate Upton.  Click on this link.  She’s a bit of a dork, but not ugly at all.

The Reds picked up a game last night and are now 2 games up on the Pirates.  What if Mat Latos finally figured something out last night?  What if he is going to continue to pitch well for the remainder of this season?  That’s part of why I think the Reds should run away with this division soon….

The Reds are 2 games up in the Central nearing the end of June.  Based on their play so far, it is clear that they’re in a weak division.  What do you think of their chances the rest of the way?

I think the Reds will run away with the division this year.  And this is why:  They have played mediocre baseball and have a 2 game lead.  Their bullpen has been excellent.  Their starting pitching has been hit and miss (mostly miss for 3 of their 5 starters) and they haven’t hit.  If the starting pitching continues to improve like it has lately (Leake is throwing well, Latos is showing signs of dominance) the bullpen will have less pressure.  And this offense is starting to finally wake up.  Also, don’t forget, Joey Votto is hitting like .430 in June.  Ridiculous.  If Latos can start pitching well with consistency, then there is no stopping this team.

Chapman still hasn’t found it

The Reds dropped 2 of 3 to the worse team in the American League this weekend.  Their stopper Johnny Cueto was the only bright spot on Hall of Fame weekend.

Friday night saw the Reds give up a lead when Bailey left the bases loaded for Bill Bray’s first return coming back from the DL.  I am not sure why a guy’s first appearance on the mound in 2 months was a bases loaded 1 out situation, but why not trial by fire.  Bray walked in the tying run and allowed the go ahead on a sac fly.  Bailey was given the loss.  While there was still 3 innings for the Reds to reclaim the lead, they were unable to take advantage of opportunities.

Saturday was an excellent day.  The pregame festivities were outstanding.  Sean Casey was and is still loved by so many in this city.  Cueto went 7 shut out innings and the Reds hitters provided plenty of offense.

Sunday was an excellent outing by both starting pitchers.  It was Joey Votto who hit an 8th inning HR off Diamond to go up 3-2.  Leake handed the ball off to Chapman who surrendered a HR to Josh Willingham to blow the save.

Questionable decisions this weekend.  We always like to question the manager.  And we always will until they name us the next manager.  So let’s discuss the two from this weekend.  Friday night they pulled Bailey with the bases loaded and 1 out.  Whether you go with the mind set of “Let him pitch out of this” or “get him out now and shut it down” it appeared that Bailey was at the end of his line.  Typically I like to think that in that situation I would allow him 1 more batter to try to get someone to roll over on one or a K.  He is the guy that will get the loss if he does poorly.  Or, as it was Friday, he got the loss because the reliever was unable to throw a strike to the first batter.  I don’t have doubts in Bray.  The guy threw in more games than anyone last year for the Reds.  But he hasn’t thrown to major league batters in 2 months, why bring him into a high pressure situation.  The second questionable decision is Sunday.  Some have said that they should have let Leake try to finish.  I disagree.  You have a closer.  He has been lights out all season with a few missteps.  If you don’t trust your closer to record 3 outs, then you need a new closer.

That being said, what’s wrong with Chapman?  Is he just “human” like Dusty said?  Either mentally or physically, there appears to be something wrong with him.  Again, they haven’t named me manager yet (for some reason) but if it’s me, I am putting Jose Arredondo out there the next time a save situation comes around.
